GMA Today
A couple of good items appeared on GMA this morning. One concerns the advertising of cereals (those we grew up with), Rice Crispies, Frosted Flakes, and Fruit Loops were the particular cereals singled out for the report. This comes under the threat of lawsuits from parents and nutritional advocacy groups (everytime I see advocate, I relate it to activist). If they don't meet minimum health requirements, then they will not be advertising to kids 12 and under. Exactly how they'll do this is beyond me, but that is their goal. Seems the new wave of nutritionists are blaming the cereals for the weight problems of kids. Excuse me, didn't we eat these same cereals 45 years ago? Were we fat? NO!! Perhaps because we were made to get off our butts and go outside and play. Also, just perhaps, we were given snacks and treats by Mom because we didn't have the run of the pantry. Mother controlled what we ate, no fast food, no processed food, just what Mom cooked. Maybe if Mothers played more of a mothering role, kids wouldn't be in the physical mess they're in. Perhaps if government schools instituted recess again, along with nutritious meals, that would help, you think? Get the drink and snack machines out of government schools, and you may see a difference. Can't hurt to try. The government playing the blame game again! Instead of parents and schools being responsible for what their kids eat, they're going after corporate America again. After all, that's where the money is!
The second topic was interesting, although something we've known all along. With Father's Day approaching, they did a segment on what values a father imposes on the raising of children. They talked about the value of children being raised with both a male and female influence, as men communicate with children differently than women. Men tend to speak to their kids as they do with people outside of the home, whereas women tend to talk to them with the limited vocabulary they use at home. Men also see things differently in how to teach children to handle life situations. Women use the emotional stance, whereas men use the logical stance. Both of these, combined, are necessary for children to become well-rounded adults in how they deal with all aspects of life.
It will be interesting to see how the gay/lesbian coalition reacts to this study, which is something we've known since the beginning of time. With the homosexual adoptions going on today, it will be interesting to see what the results will show after turning mother nature inside-out. Think kids are screwed up now, I look forward to the study of the next generation of mixed up young adults.
