RE: Immigration Reform
I agree, somewhat with what the Red Lady said about Immigration Reform on June 20. Here is my take on the situation. Now, I'm not speaking for ALL liberals, libertarians, women, middle-aged women, American workers, white people or Southerners, I'm speaking for ME.
I feel the companies that hire illegals should be fined. It should be economically unfeasible to hire illegals. This would cost Americans more money, specifically on housing, it would cost companies more money to check the status of applicants and it would cost whatever political party that starts enforcing this law votes. The reason the illegals come here is for the work. If they didn't have the work, they wouldn't come here. Most of the immigrants coming here at the turn of the century came here for food, not work. But also the immigration rules were less stringent then. A very interesting article on the history of US immigration.
Free Market and less Government control is what the GOP has always stood for, and to a similar extent, the Libertarians. Enforcing this law would put limits on the competition by causing companies to pay more for their employees, and their employee benefits, and therefore profits would decrease.
Enforcing this law would also mean more government control by putting standards on who companies hire. But some limitations are a good thing, like the minimum age laws and minimum wage laws. If we didn't have laws on the age of workers, companies would employ young children, just like they used to. If we didn't have minimum-wage laws, they would pay much lower wages and no one would take the jobs, except illegal workers. Hummmm...
Now what to do about all these illegal immigrants that are here now? It would not be cost effective for the government to deport them, there are just too many. If we made them citizens, that wouldn't be fair to the one's applying legally. If we did deport them, that would put a drain on many industries, specifically housing, and housing starts would drop, which would send the US into an economic tail spin. From a liberal prospective, sending back illegals would disrupt family life and possibly cause hardship to those who left for a reason. I say, sorry, be disrupted. You should have done this legally.
Giving babies born in the US automatic citizenship should not be allowed. This will effect potential voters for whatever political party is in power, but get over yourselves. Back in the Day when we needed citizens, that was the way to do it. Now we have to limit who comes here.
Building a wall across the Southern United States is a stupid law. First, no money was budgeted to build this wall. Second, how will that keep people out? Ever heard of ladders or shovels? Third, ever heard of the Berlin Wall? And how did that work?
The technology to verify SSN numbers already exists, but getting the government to embrace new technology costs money. Outsourcing to private companies is a good idea, but the credit card companies already have illegals as customers, so sure, they'll volunteer to get rid of some of their customers.
