OK, I'll Play Too

You're direct quote about the war was 'We didn't bail out of WWII when things were going badly, and we still shouldn't allow the terrorists to win this one by leaving Iraq. Look at what happened when we left Vietnam.'

WWII was a different kind of war. The roles were clear, we knew who we were fighting. Our goals were clearly defined, with the country and other allies behind us, that's why is was called World War II. The entire country was asked to sacrifice for the 'war effort' and, for the most part, the country was behind it. I'm sure there were detractors, but they haven't lived on in history.

As for Vietnam, you sound like it was a bad thing that we got out of it. What would have been a better ending? It had already dragged on for 10 years, with loss of thousands lives. What was the goal there? Vietnam was a war that changed our country's perception of what war was about, and not in a good way.

And now to Iraq, how will the terrorists win if we leave Iraq? We are supposed to be training the Iraqi people to police and protect themselves, but they don't seem to be stepping up to the plate too well. Different Muslim sects are killing each other, are we supposed to stop that? I'm not sure anyone can stop that. Iraq wasn't the original target, anyway. All of a sudden, the reason we were at war changed. What is the plan of attack, so to speak? Our commander-in-chief doesn't seem to be following his military advisors advice. How can we win this? What does 'winning' it mean? Iraq is a working democracy? We've established a puppet government in Iraq? What's in it for us?

Remember, WWII only took 4 years to overthrow 2 governments, Hitler and the 3rd Reich and Japan. Why have we taken over 4 years to do....what?
