Response to the Duke lacrosse case
I just have to respond to the Blue lady's response to the verdict of the Duke lacrosse case. I have followed this case extensively since the beginning, as this fiasco could happen at any school. The comment, "It's good if they got off if they were innocent" puzzles me. The ruling is; they are innocent, not "if". The three prosecutors that replaced Nifong performed due process, something he did NOT. We know that lacrosse players are of a roudier sort than some, but to falsely accuse people of something as serious as rape is just as bad on the other side of the fence. This is the type of crying wolf that hurts any true rape case. Credibility goes down the drain, and real victims aren't taken as seriously, sort of like crying "sexual harassment" where there is none.
One true ascertation that Blue lady made is that, hopefully, these guys will be more cautious in choosing the company they keep. If you have been keeping up with this case, you would know and understand what it was all about. It's nothing more than a local D.A. soliciting the black vote to get in office. Unfortunately, this wasn't really about rape, but was turned into a race/class case in order to carry favor with the local black constituents. As the polls show, he was dangerously close to losing this race for office of the D.A., but only won by a slim margin. He accomplished his feat at the expense of college kids, period.
The accuser had played this rape story a few years ago in Roxboro, NC (a town just north of Durham) and dropped the charges. This same accuser had recently had sex with others, as DNA proved (the same DNA that the D.A. withheld from the defense attorneys, which is illegal), that was NOT the DNA of the lacrosse players. This wench perpetually changed her story on an everyday basis. This is the same accuser that has previously been in lots of trouble with the law and has served jail time. These girls were hired strippers. Guys do that sort of thing from time to time, and even nice guys do it. Think about all the bachelor parties. This girl also had another baby the beginning of this year (she already has two kids), thus she was pregnant before she even danced at this party.
Bottom line, these guys were totally and completely, falsely accused of a crime they did not commit, and a D.A. that needed votes used this incident to gather those votes. The timing proved to be perfect for him. BTW, these students totally cooperated with authorities from the beginning and volunteered their DNA and anything that was needed. They didn't try to hide from nor lie about the events of that night.
Yes, there are rapes that occur by atheletes, and that's unfortunate. There's no excuse for it, and college girls should also understand their surroundings and what can happen after an alcohol-induced party with these guys (or any guys for that matter). You can't group all atheletes together. We get accused of stereotyping when we do that to other groups of people. The difference with these guys is that they do make the grades. I knew lacrosse players in college, and they earn partial scholarships. That means they have to make grades to keep those scholarships, and they don't take the courses that football and basketball players are able to take. We have to define the differences here, because those two sports are what brings in the money to support the other scholarship sports. Lacrosse, soccer, baseball, swimming, fencing, pole vaulting, etc. (along with the additional women's sports) are funded by those two sports where you typically find the atheletes that are pushed through with degrees that have been developed for them to get through college. Most of the players that have been granted the partial scholarships for the other sports have come from good schools and can make the grades like any other student. In other words, they're NOT all of the same mentality/caliber. They aren't using college as a training ground to go to the pros, but to get an education.
As I previously stated, if these were one of my kids that had gone through this, I'd turn right around and sue the D.A.'s office (for sure) and possibly the school that I had poured money into (remember, these are partial scholarships) that did NOT stand behind my child when this first happened. The rush to judgement has certainly silenced 88 campus administrators and professors, students, and a community (along with the Black Panthers out of Atlanta), Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, etc.
Hopefully, the unethical practices by the D.A. will force him to resign. If not, disbarment seems appropriate. He's been a disgrace to the legal community of prosecuting attorneys and an embarrassment to my home town. He's also an embarrassment to the law school at UNC where he received his law degree (sort of like John Edwards). I understand that a former high school friend of mine, who held the position of D.A. until he left to become a circuit court judge, is totally incensed about Nifong's behavior.
Speaking of behavior, when judging college kids and how they should "control their behavior", perhaps we, as adults (older adults), could control ours too. I've been exposed to some rather illicit behavior that I find rather offensive (and I don't get offended easily), so I don't believe we're in a position to be judging those that have not entered the real world.
In closing, yes these guys were found innocent because they were, but they will live with this forever. Whenever someone googles their names, it will be there in black and white, and that is what is not fair, such as life.
