WMD
I was asked to document where I read about WMD. I'm not going to rewrite sections of books (I'll list them so they can be read by others since I've taken the time to read them), but I'll give you the jist of the contents.
"Disinformation" by Richard Miniter - Myth #11 (There is no evidence that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction.)
In a secret operation on June 23, 2004 (right at three years ago), U.S. forces found and seized tons of uranium and 1,000 radioactive materials in powdered form.
Poland's military intelligence chief, Marek Dukaczewski, received tips from Iraqis that chemical weapons had been buried to avoid detection. These were weapons that had been sold to terrorists. Polish military officials bought 17 chemical-weapon warheads from Iraqis, at $5,000 each, in order to keep them from insurgents. These were to have been destroyed during the 1991-1998 UN inspection. Saddam repeatedly broke UN laws, and this was just one of them.
U.S. soliders came upon 1500 gallons of chemical agents in a warehouse on August 8, 2005 (this came as a surprise). This was the largest chemical lab found in Iraq. We all know that Saddam used chemical weapons at least ten times against his own people, but we weren't supposed to do anything about him, now were we?
May 17, 2004 - a nerve agent, sarin, was contained inside a roadside bomb that went off, lending to the fact that Saddam did have nerve gas. At this same time, a projectile loaded with mustard gas was found.
There are several entities (not all Bush-friendly) that attest to the materials found to use in the manufacturing of WMD. The list is as follows and can be found on pages 99 - 105 for detailed reading about who they are.
Amatzia Baram
CIA (well before Bush's tenure)
Hans Blix
Richard Butler
Congressional Research Service
Anthony R. Cordesman
Charles Duelfer
Rolf Ekeus
David Kay
Yossef Bodansky
Kenneth Pollack
Here, I'll attempt to address the idea that only George Bush believed there were WMD, that he made it all up, and lied to everyone about them. The book, "Bankrupt, the Intellectual and Moral Bankruptcy of Today's Democratic Party", by David Limbaugh touches on this.
On pages 14-18, you'll read direct quotes from Bill Clinton, Al Gore (while they were in office), along with Madeleine Albright, Carl Levin, Tom Daschle, John Kerry, Nancy Pelosi, Bob Graham, Ted Kennedy, Robert Byrd, Jay Rockefeller, Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, and John Edwards regarding WMD. They were all certain of them and the dangers the imposed, not to mention actions that should be taken to curtail the use of them.
Lieutenant General Moshe Yaalon, chief of staff of the Israel Defense Forces from 2002 - 2005 has insisted that Saddam moved chemical weapons into Syria right before the war started.
Kenneth R. Timmerman has written of former deputy undersecretary of defense, John A. Shaw, who was responsible for tracking Saddam's weapons programs pre and post the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq. He stated that WMD Saddam bought from Russia were moved to Syria and Lebanon before the war. Supposedly, these were removed by special forces units from Russia, along with eradicating any evidence of their existence. He also claims that chemical weapons were found in Iraq.
As for media publications, the following is a paragraph I've quoted:
The Boston Herald editorialized that "there have been just too many recent reports, impossible to brush off, that (Iraqi WMD) were transferred to Syria shortly before the beginning of the U.S. invasion of Iraq in March, 2003." The place to start an investigation into the claims "is the two million documents captured by U.S. forces in Iraq along with more than 2,500 hours of audiotapes of Saddam Hussein's meetings with underlings." According to the Herald, the general who oversaw Pentagon spy satellites confirmed that large truck convoys were seen traveling from Iraq to Syria as the war began. President Bush eventually decided to release more of the documents.
There is certainly something else to remember, going to war with Iraq wasn't just because of the threat of WMD, but Saddam blatantly provoked an attack. He had breached promise upon promise for weapons inspectors. French and German ambassadors also endorsed their beliefs of WMD. This doesn't even cover the chemical and nuclear weapons that were being mass produced.
One enlightening tidbit you won't hear the liberals speak of, and that's the fact that once we invaded Iraq on the assumption there were WMD, Muammar Qadhafi announced on December 19, 2003, that Libya was abandoning its WMD and long-range missles programs "because it's in our own interest and security." If we only acted on our threats, perhaps other dictators would take note and appreciate that we are a threat to their ill-conceived notions.
No, you won't see this information presented in the mainstream media because it makes us appear justified in attacking Iraq. The liberal press would love nothing more than for us to lose this war in an effort to allow the Dems to win in 2008. They don't care about the threats to our country or our soldiers, just that Bush goes down in defeat. If only they could come up with some cohesive ideas about how to help us defeat the terrorism that threatens our country, but that's too much to ask for a group that still thinks Gore really won the election. It all goes back to the hatred of the Republicans for winning in 2000 and again in 2004.
