Spring is "almost" here!

Blue lady has some excellent points. There is still slavery going on in all parts of the world today. The U.S. isn't the only country that had slavery, though if you listen to the media, you would think so. I believe this heritage month idea is a repercussion of this business of the NAACP wanting a formal apology for slavery here in the South. It's difficult to forget a war that's long since past when it's constantly thrown back in your face under the guise of slavery. Yes, the Brits bought and sold slaves from Africans themselves. Lincoln detested slavery, but didn't care for blacks. As good of a person as he was, he thought they were subordinate in the human race. He knew he couldn't have it both ways as far as slave states were concerned. It was either all or none, and he didn't want freed slaves in the North. His goal was to colonize and send them back to Africa. The South was already realizing that the cost of owning and caring for slaves was becoming more expensive than hiring regular labor. The real reason they hung on so long was for voting power. When a slave was counted as 2/3 of a person, then the numbers would serve in votes. Yes, the South wanted what Jefferson and the founding fathers intended, more states rights without a large federal government. That's exactly what we need today, but good luck! It's not about reliving the past, but remembering. It's not all about the war of aggression, but a Southern culture that seems to indeed be "gone with the wind".
